The Speicherstadt in Hamburg will soon be 100 years old. It was officially opened in 1927. Construction work on the Speicherstadt lasted 44 years from 1883 until its completion. <\/span><\/p>

From the 16th century, residential areas had previously developed on the site, which were eventually demolished for the construction of this important transshipment point. <\/span><\/p>

What was stored in the Speicherstadt?<\/h3>

When was the Speicherstadt Hamburg built?<\/h3>

Construction work began in 1883 and the majority of the warehouses were completed a few years later. The Speicherstadt Hamburg was officially opened on October 29, 1888 with the laying of the keystone by Kaiser Wilhelm II at Brooksbr\u00fccke. <\/p>

But even after this official opening, the building extensions continued until 1927. Although around 70% of the warehouse space was bombed during the Second World War, the majority of the buildings were rebuilt immediately after the end of the war. <\/p>

How was the Speicherstadt warehouse district in Hamburg built?<\/h3>

Construction began with the forced relocation of around 20,000 people and the demolition of their residential areas on the two Elbe islands mentioned above. The Speicherstadt covers an area of around 26 hectares and is around 1.5 kilometers long and between 150 and 250 meters wide. <\/p>

As was customary at the turn of the century, the buildings were constructed from red brick. But despite the uniform basic material, each individual storage block has a slightly different color and ornamentation. <\/p>

Similar to Venice, the buildings stand on wooden piles that were driven up to 12 meters deep into the mud of the Elbe. While Venice was built on larch wood, oak piles were used in Hamburg. <\/p>

Who owns the Speicherstadt Hamburg?<\/h3>

The Speicherstadt in Hamburg belongs to the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, is part of HHLA’s real estate portfolio and is managed by the Hamburg Port Authority<\/a> (HPA).<\/p>

This public-law institution manages the port and owns the majority of the Port of Hamburg. “Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel with Chilehaus” have become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. <\/p>
