When people think of mini-golf, they often still picture concrete courses from the 1980s, faded colors, and grumpy course attendants. But the leisure industry is evolving rapidly. After years of being considered the “hot spot” for innovative indoor activities in Hamburg with our OPOLUM Escape Rooms, the pandemic understandably put the brakes on innovation in our industry for the time being.

But we never stand still: As OPOLUM, we’ve continuously evolved and are now your go-to provider of a wide range of immersive leisure activities in Hamburg. Starting this year—2026—a very clear new trend has emerged in major cities: the big mini-golf comeback.
The trend toward modern, hip mini-golf is currently spreading from London to us. There, courses with a cool, urban vibe were already a massive hit years ago. Now this craze is finally making its way to major German cities. For decades, Hamburg’s only indoor option was the classic black-light course on the outskirts of the city in Stellingen. But the market is currently booming.
What mini-golf venues are currently open in Hamburg, and how good are their concepts? I’ve done some research on the industry for you.
An Overview of Mini-Golf Courses in Hamburg
1. Swingers (Reeperbahn) – The London Hype Concept
This venue is definitely the forerunner of the current global craze. Many years ago, I had the chance to meet the founder of Swingers in London in person. What’s exciting about the concept is that what really draws people in is the unique atmosphere. It’s a full-fledged nightlife experience with drinks right by the train tracks, an integrated food court, and DJs. Swingers on the Reeperbahn is currently still under construction. It’s not yet clear exactly when it will open—but the concept is currently expanding worldwide and is set to really shake things up in the neighborhood. As soon as it opens, I’ll check it out for you and share my experience here.
2. Moviegolf (Hafencity) – Movie Trivia Under Black Light
Moviegolf is based on the tried-and-true concept of classic black-light mini-golf with traditional courses. The real innovation is hidden on the walls: While your fellow players take their shots, you can look for familiar movie scenes on the walls—a fun way to pass the time for anyone who has to wait. One minor downside: Instead of fitting, atmospheric movie music, unfortunately only regular radio plays in the background. The location, right in the heart of Hamburg’s HafenCity, is absolutely top-notch, though.
3. StoryGolf (Hafencity) – Set Design for Movie Buffs
Because the location in HafenCity is so great, Moviegolf will soon face direct competition. StoryGolf is moving into the neighborhood. Even though the name sounds similar, it’s based on a completely different concept: Here, you can expect authentic, elaborate set designs. Every single course is visually different—at least that’s what the provider’s website promises. It’s set to open in fall 2026. My expectations are high. As soon as it opens, I’ll test out the concept for you.
4. Action Arena (Norderstedt) – The All-Inclusive Classic
Here you can enjoy classic black-light mini-golf. The big difference—and advantage for groups—is the pricing structure: At the Action Arena, you pay a fixed price, and your ticket includes access to other attractions in the arena in addition to mini-golf.
The hype is just getting started!
The market in the Hanseatic city is extremely dynamic. Since the trend toward modern mini-golf is just really starting to take off, we’re sure to see even more providers and innovative concepts opening in Hamburg in the coming months.

In a traditional escape room, this generally doesn’t work: there, the group plunges into a highly intense, immersive adventure for 60 minutes, where the mission is the absolute priority—there’s simply no room for deep conversations or a drink while playing.
Not an either/or situation, but the best of both worlds
So does the hype surrounding mini-golf and game shows spell the end of escape rooms? Not at all. These new trends won’t replace escape rooms. They fill a different niche and will coexist perfectly in the future.
The logical conclusion for the market: Modern premium providers simply offer these different facets of entertainment all under one roof.
