What are escape rooms actually all about?
You’re probably already familiar with the term “escape room” – in principle, it’s usually about cracking a series of entertaining puzzles in a certain amount of time, the solutions to which help you get through one or more rooms to the exit.
But there are also countless other variations – for example, it can be about solving a murder mystery, finding a treasure, preventing a crime and much more!
It all comes down to the ability to think creatively and combine correctly – so the participants experience a highly unusual adventure together. Logic, teamwork and creative thinking are the keys to success here.

The most frequently asked questions about escape rooms in Hamburg
If you’re not yet familiar with escape games, you’ll probably have a few questions – we’ll answer the most common ones here.
How long have escape rooms been around?
In 2004, Toshimitsu Takagi from Japan developed the computer game “Crimson Room”, in which the aim was to escape from a room by solving various tasks and puzzles. This electronic game then gave rise to the first live escape games, also in Japan, in 2007. Since then, this form of sophisticated entertainment has made a triumphant advance around the globe. You can now find an escape-the-room game in almost every metropolis in the world in a wide variety of game types, including open-air treasure hunts, for example.
What's so funny about escape room games?
Everything! You experience a new world, escape from everyday life and can completely immerse yourself in your new role with your friends for a while. In most games, you can be a group of three to seven friends (for companies, there are sometimes special team-building events for up to 20 participants on request), and you will remember it together for a long time to come. It’s most fun to start the whole thing later in the afternoon and then reflect on your experiences over dinner and a few drinks.
It’s entirely up to you whether you take your escape room in a sporty way and want to break records, or whether you take a completely relaxed approach. But a good part of the tension comes from the mercilessly ticking clock!
Is that perhaps even scary?
These adventure games are usually not scary – but they are all the more exciting. That’s why you are welcome to bring your smart kids aged 12 and over. If you want to be scared in an escape room, you have to search explicitly for “horror escape rooms” or simply stay in the safety of the digital world and should take a look at the scary shocker Escape Room, for example.
What happens if I can't solve a puzzle?
All escape rooms are permanently monitored by an “operator” – i.e. if one of you wants to leave the set prematurely, if you are stuck or if any other problems arise, you can contact them immediately at any time and your wishes will be complied with immediately.
And by the way: Of course, the escape rooms must not really be locked – all doors are unlocked and can be opened at any time!
Why is the OPOLUM escape room theater in Hamburg so unusual?
If you’re in Hamburg, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the “OPOLUM”. We have expanded the classic escape room model to include live actors. This means that at OPOLUM Hamburg you don’t just play the escape rooms with your friends, but in the presence of actors who repeatedly intervene in the action, making the experience even more real and intense! How exactly does an escape room game work?
You register online for the scheduled date and arrive around fifteen minutes before the scheduled start time. You will get to know the team and your personal game leader (operator) in peace and quiet. You will then find out in detail what tasks you have to complete and who has which role in your team.
If you still have any questions, it’s time to find out everything you need to know before you start. Because once the game has begun, the mercilessly ticking clock will provide the adrenaline needed to successfully master the adventure
