“Schönes Leben Speicherstadt”: Culinary delights on 330 square meters

The “Schönes Leben Speicherstadt” restaurant is a must-visit in Hamburg. Hamburg’s Speicherstadt warehouse district, a historical architectural gem, has undergone a fascinating development. Its history dates back to the 19th century, when it was created as a warehouse complex to cope with the Hanseatic city’s flourishing trade.

Over the course of time, the use of the Speicherstadt has changed. While it was once the heart of trade, it was restored and transformed after the Second World War to create space for culture and commerce. Today it is a cultural center with museums, our Escape Room Theater and the wonderful restaurant “Schönes Leben Speicherstadt”.

In the Speicherstadt in Block S, where the “Restaurant Schönes Leben Speicherstadt” is located today, customs clearance for passenger traffic and hackney carriages (carriages pulled by farm animals) were to take place on the first floor. For this reason, particularly large windows were installed on the first floor. Today, these large windows allow plenty of light into the “Schönes Leben” restaurant.

You will also find a cozy and warm lighting atmosphere here and the skillful use of wood invites you to feast and linger. The open kitchen behind a glazed wall shows that this is a modern restaurant.

The highlight is undoubtedly the massive wooden supports that run through the entire first floor. When the first warehouses were built, they still relied on iron supports. However, three years after construction of the Speicherstadt began, the first warehouses collapsed like houses of cards in fires.

The iron skeletons broke under extreme heat. They then switched to wood, which was actually a more fireproof material than iron at the time, despite its flammability. Block S benefited from this change years later during the third construction phase.

Even if it is worth visiting this restaurant just for the imposing architecture, the menu also shines with excellent food. From high-quality currywurst and delicious typical Hamburg fish dishes to vegetarian and vegan delicacies, there is something for everyone here.
