The history of coffee in the Speicherstadt: Burg Coffee Museum

If you are interested in coffee, the Burg Coffee Museum in Hamburg, in the Burg Coffee Roastery, is the right place for you. In the 19th century, the Speicherstadt became the heart of the coffee trade.

The warehouses were filled with sacks of exotic coffee beans from all over the world. The Speicherstadt developed into a center of coffee enjoyment, where the beans were stored, ground and sold.

Hamburg quickly developed into the coffee capital. Inventions that we now take for granted as part of everyday life certainly contributed to this.

Did you know, for example, that the active ingredient caffeine was discovered in Hamburg? Without caffeine, early morning coffee would probably never have become so popular. Its counterpart, the decaffeinated bean, was of course also developed in Hamburg. And the first “coffee to go” was served in – drum roll – Hamburg. No wonder a coffee museum has been established in Hamburg.

Today, you can still feel and experience the fascinating history of coffee in the Speicherstadt. Speicher Block R, for example, was built specifically for the storage and refinement of green coffee. Today, you can smell the fine coffee aromas from today’s coffee roastery, which the Burg family founded in Hamburg back in 1923, every day in front of St. Annenplatz. Tradition is very important here.

The Burg Coffee Museum offers unique insights into the world of coffee and invites you to discover the Germans’ favorite drink.

More than 1,000 exhibits in the only vaulted cellar in the Speicherstadt show the history of coffee in an impressive and multifaceted way at the Hamburg Coffee Museum.

On some days, visitors are lucky and the historic coffee roasting machine is fired up. Then you can watch the coffee being roasted live. An impressive process that everyone should see at least once.

Everything under one roof: Coffee Museum Hamburg, coffee roastery, store & café

Outside Block R, “GENUSSSPEICHER” is written in large letters. A fitting term for the multifaceted offerings that are united here under one roof.

The Burg Coffee Museum is located in the vaulted cellar. On the first floor in the front area is the store with all kinds of home-roasted coffee specialties made in the German Speicherstadt.

If you have a little more time than just quickly buying your favorite coffee in the store, you can sit down at one of the many cozy tables in the back area and enjoy your coffee right away.
