In case you have any further questions about escape rooms after watching the video, we answer the most frequently asked questions here. These include:
What is an escape room?
An escape room (also known as a room escape, escape game, exit game, etc.) is a game in which small groups (usually 2 – 6 people) have to solve a series of puzzles within a certain period of time (usually 60 – 90 minutes). The respective solutions help you to get through one or more rooms to the exit or to successfully complete a certain mission. You can now find these exciting escape room games in almost every major city in the world.
Where do escape rooms come from?
In 2004, Toshimitsu Takagi from Japan developed the computer game “Crimson Room”, in which the aim was to escape from a room by solving various tasks and puzzles. This electronic game then gave rise to the first live escape games in 2007, also in Japan.
Since then, this form of sophisticated entertainment has made its way around the globe without a game. There are now a myriad of different escape room concepts, but the aim is always to complete a certain mission under time pressure.
How does an escape room work?
In general, there is a specific mission to complete (e.g. “Solve the criminal case, escape from prison, find the treasure, rob the bank” and much more). An employee of the respective organizer acts as “gamemaster” or “operator” and explains all the rules and the aim of the game at the beginning. You are then led into a specially designed adventure room and have to solve a series of puzzles with your team within a certain time in order to successfully complete the mission.
What is a pop-up escape room?
A pop-up escape room is a light version of an escape room. Existing rooms with various puzzles are adapted so that an escape room experience can be created quickly at almost any location with little effort. Companies often use this option for promotional and branding purposes. An escape room event can also last just ten minutes instead of the usual 60 – 90 minutes.
How long does an escape room last?
As described above, the most common duration is around one hour – depending on how quickly you solve the puzzles, of course. However, this time varies depending on the provider and the task. Some escape rooms last 90 minutes or even longer. The pop-up escape rooms mentioned in the previous point, which are often developed for promotional purposes, last considerably less than the usual 60 minutes.
