Special city tour through Hamburg: 5 tips

In recent years, more and more special city tours of Hamburg have been developed to complement the “classic” offer, i.e. guided tours on foot or by bus. Now is a good time to try them out. After all, the times when city tours were only possible virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic are hopefully finally a thing of the past and city tourism is slowly recovering. To get a first impression of the topography and history of a foreign city, a city tour is ideal at the beginning of your stay.

As we at OPOLUM have designed an extremely unusual city tour ourselves with the Outdoor Escape Game, we present five special city tours through Hamburg here.

Special city tour Hamburg times five

#1: Scary tour through Hamburg

As in all port cities, many sinister events and crimes have occurred in Hamburg. A visit to the Hamburg Dungeon really gets under your skin, where 600 years of scary history are served up so realistically that your hair will stand on end.

A visit to an escape room in the legendary OPOLUM, where actors also intervene in the action and after a few minutes you are so caught up in the story that you completely forget that it’s actually just a game, causes no less of an adrenaline rush.

You can find out more about this and other tips for fans of suspense and the morbid in our blog post “5 Stations: Where the creepy meets Hamburg“! A visit to the Dungeon costs €25.50 for adults and €20.50 for children aged between 10 and 14.

#2: Homeless people guide you through their city

Special tours organized and led by homeless people will take you to places in Hamburg’s city centre that you are guaranteed not to find in any travel guide. The tour – suitable for visitors to Hamburg aged 17 and over – shows how homeless people live and survive in Hamburg. The approximately two-hour tour will familiarize you with places to go, places to sleep and the dangers of life on the streets. An eye-opening tour that has succeeded in providing some formerly homeless people with part-time jobs. Prices for the tours average €10, but can be as little as €6 for individual participants depending on the size of the group.

#3: Blind through Hamburg

Being blindfolded also opens up new worlds of experience, allowing visitors to take a trip into the world of the blind and visually impaired. This concept has been around for some time in Vienna under the name “Dialogue in the dark”. You will be guided through an absolutely dark hall where you will learn at various stations how blind people master the tasks of everyday life. A blind guide shows you how a visually impaired person can cope in traffic or in a restaurant. The blind city tour was born out of this highly successful idea! You hook up with a blind tour guide, get a mask over your eyes and off you go on an exciting and informative tour of the city, which you experience as someone who is suddenly blind. The individual tours cost between € 25 and € 39.

#4: Culinary city tour Hamburg

A top tip for connoisseurs are the culinary city tours that are offered for several districts of Hamburg. From Blankenese to St. Pauli or Eimsbüttel to HafenCity and the Speicherstadt, the numerous gourmet city walks range. The gourmet tours last three hours on average, with only around 3 km being covered on foot. Stops are made at up to six different food stations, where you can sample dishes from northern Germany as well as from almost every country in the world. Tour prices range from € 39 to € 59 for adults and from € 20 to € 30 for children.

#5: Puzzle walk through the Speicherstadt

OPOLUM offers you a particularly exciting and entertaining way to explore the fascinating Speicherstadt warehouse district in the center of Hamburg. We have developed an outdoor escape game that is ideal for the whole family and combines an exciting, highly varied story with interesting and curious historical facts. This adventure tour, which is also ideal for children of all ages (accompanied by adults), is based on the experience we have gained with our escape rooms and combines fun, games and excitement with an educational journey through the heart of Hamburg.
